Press Release: Eaglehawk Local Running for Council
Bevan Madden, a 28-year-old mathematics teacher and lifelong resident of Eaglehawk, is running for the Greater Bendigo City Council, in the Whipstick Ward, in the upcoming Local Government Elections.
He decided to run to improve the function of Council and to prepare Bendigo for the growth it is expected to experience in the next thirty years. As a member of Whipstick Ward his entire life, Bevan is excited about the prospect of representing and serving the community. “This community has given so much to me, and I’m excited to give something back. The Ward is such a special part of Bendigo; representing it would be a great honour and privilege.”
The 2024 Council Community Satisfaction Survey found that respondents from across the Bendigo region rated the council lower in all areas when compared to the 2023 results, and only 9% of respondents believed that overall council direction had improved.
Several priorities have been identified by Bevan to change these results, which include a renewed focus on getting council basics right and preparing Bendigo for growth in the next four decades. “Council needs to deliver the basics to ensure Bendigonians are invested in our future. We must get the day-to-day support right to ensure Bendigo remains Victoria’s greatest regional centre.”
Listening posts are planned for the Eaglehawk and Raywood areas to ensure Bevan is aligned with the views of the community.
Bevan has previously served as a committee member and president of the Bendigo Theatre Company, where he helped steer the company through the COVID Pandemic, from 2018-2022. He has also been a member of the Bendigo Symphony Orchestra since 2017, and the Bendigo Umpires Association since 2021.
He currently teaches mathematics at Girton Grammar School, a school which he attended as a student.
